Original articles on every field of research underlying the Physical Anthropology as a scientific field are accepted.

In addition, REAF publishes comments and editorials on invitation, as well as reviews of recently published books and any other activities of general interest for the national and international community of Physical Anthropologists. All opinions expressed are complete responsibility of the authors.

RULES FOR PUBLICATION IN THE REAF

 

1. PREPARATION OF ARTICLES

1.1. Format: Articles should be written according to the following parameters:

a) The text should be written in A4 page size, with double spacing between lines, both the text and the list of References and legends of Tables and Figures. Footnote comments are not allowed.

b) The font used will be Times New Roman 12 point.

c) The margins used in the document design will be 3 cm (top, bottom, left and right).

d) The papers together with the rest of the associated scientific information should be sent in MS Word format (.doc / .docx).

e) Images must be sent in JPEG (.jpg) and TIFF (.tif) format (minimum quality 300 ppp/dpi).

1.2. Types of contributions: Original articles, review articles and short communications (Short Reports).

1.3. Articles and reviews will have a maximum length of 25 pages and short reports of 10 pages, including in both cases the Bibliography, Tables and Figures. In cases of special relevance, or due to the type of subject matter covered, databases or annexed materials may be added which, due to their length, cannot be included in the text (preferably by means of a link to access them).

1.4. Languages: Spanish or English.

 

2. STRUCTURE OF THE PAPERS

2.1. First page of the article (Front Page):

It shall contain the following information:

a) Title of the paper in English and Spanish.

b) List of authors in order of appearance/signature (e.g.: Begoña Gómez, José García, Juan Antonio Aparicio, Samuel Smith, Sara Rodero), as well as the Institutions to which they are currently linked.

c) Complete postal address and e-mail address of the author to whom correspondence will be sent during the process of editing the article.

d) A proposed short title (Running Title) of the paper (no more than 50 characters including spaces).

e) Number of Tables and Figures included in the paper.

2.2. Abstract:

The abstract should not exceed 250 words. It should succinctly present the objectives, the methodology used, the most important results and the main conclusions of the study. It should not include references or abbreviations and should be written in Spanish and English, with the same contents.

2.3. Keywords:

A list of 4 to 6 keywords in Spanish and English should be included below each abstract.

2.4. Introduction:

It should reflect the current state of the art of the subject of the article, being, therefore, a demonstration that the authors have updated knowledge of the field of study. The main question posed in the paper should be formulated, as well as the way to address it (hypothesis and objectives).

2.5. Material and Methods:

This section should be written with sufficient clarity so that it is easy to reproduce the results obtained in the work. When a methodology is sufficiently known by the scientific community, only the reference of the authors will be necessary. When equipment is used, the authors should expressly specify the model and the company responsible for its manufacture. When necessary, the ethical implications of the research should be indicated (e.g., approval by an ethics committee of the collection and use of data, use of biological samples, request for informed consent, etc.).

2.6. Results:

These should be presented in a coherent manner, following a parallelism with the methodology selected and cited by the authors in the Material and Methods section. The results should be accompanied, when necessary, by their corresponding tables and figures.

2.7. Discussion:

This is the most creative section of a scientific article. Therefore, the authors should provide: answers to the specific questions formulated in the introduction, the most outstanding contributions of the work, the interpretation of the results based on current knowledge, the novelty of the research and its importance, the limitations and implications of the results in relation to other relevant studies and, if possible, formulate new plausible hypotheses. The Discussion is not, therefore, a repetition of the results.

2.8. Acknowledgements and/or Funding:

A maximum of five lines.

2.9. Bibliographical references:

2.9.1. Within the text:

They will be shown with the surname of the first author without italics, followed by the year in parentheses, for example: Pérez (2021), or (Pérez, 2021), Gómez et al. (2009) or, (Gómez et al., 2009) (*).

(*) If there are more than three authors, only the first one will be cited, followed by et al., for example, Martínez et al. (2010), or (Martínez et al., 2010).

Up to a number of three, all will be cited; for example: Gómez and Rodríguez (2010) or (Gómez and Rodríguez, 2010), or Gómez, Rodríguez and Fernández (2010), or (Gómez, Rodríguez and Fernández, 2010).

In the case of a specific citation to several works by the same author appearing in different publications or in different years, these will appear chronologically ascending, for example: (Gómez, 2010, 2017, 2020).

When an author appears referenced more than once with publications within the same year, the citations will be ordered with letters of the alphabet. For example: Gómez et al. (2000a, 2000b).

In the text, bibliographic references will be ordered by year of publication and if the years coincide, they will be ordered alphabetically. For example: (Pablo et al., 1999; Ruiz, 1999; Fernández et al., 2006; Rodríguez, 2006; Angora, 2010; Cabrera et al., 2010; Gómez, 2010; Martínez et al., 2022; López and Pérez, 2024).

Articles in press should be included in the list of bibliographic references.

2.9.2. Final list of bibliographical references:

It will contain only those references cited in the text and will be ordered first alphabetically and then by year.

a) For an article:

3. FIGURES, IMAGES AND TABLES

3.1. Figures and Images:

These should be on separate and numbered sheets (never included in the text) and should correspond to those cited in the article. The legends of the figures and images should be on a separate sheet. If the authors use an image or a previously published reproduction, they must show the original source of information and cite it in the corresponding caption (legend). Where appropriate, the express authorization of the author responsible for a published figure and image may be required for its subsequent use in another article.

3.1.1. Characteristics of Figures and Images:

A minimum size of 1,800 x 1,200 pixels is recommended. This resolution produces prints of approximately 15 x 10 cm at 300 ppp/dpi (dots per inch), which is generally suitable for publication.

In special cases, for example, where important details are lost, a larger size may be chosen.

Acceptable formats are JPEG (recommended for photographs) and TIFF (recommended for drawings or graphics).

3.2. Tables:

Tables should be presented on separate sheets, with their corresponding legends, numbered and cited in the article itself. The legends of the tables should be presented in the header of the table itself. The information contained in the tables must correspond with the data commented in the text.

Tables should be in MS Word format (.doc / .docx) and decimal figures should be expressed with periods (even if the text is written in Spanish).

The presentation of tables and figures should be careful both in form (structure and design) and substance (contents), in order to achieve maximum scientific understanding by the reader. Tables and figures will not be accepted for publication directly from an Excel sheet or from statistical programs.

 

4. REVIEW OF ORIGINAL ARTICLES (Cover Letter)

The revision of the texts by the authors should be accompanied by a letter (Cover Letter) explaining the changes made and the treatment given to the questions raised by the reviewers. Once the work has been accepted, the authors should send a letter of assignment of copyright (see the document “Declaration of agreement for the publication of the authors”).

Articles that do not comply with the current publication guidelines established by the Editorial Committee of the Spanish Journal of Physical Anthropology (REAF) will be returned to the authors before continuing with the evaluation process.
